Terrorist violence is the stuff of networks' nightly news programming and the corporate structure of the UBS Television Network is changing. Meanwhile, Howard Beale, the aging UBS news anchor, has lost his once strong ratings share and so the network fires him. He responds to this by declaring that he will commit suicide on-air on live TV. This makes Beale a big TV celebrity, something that the struggling station could use. He gets his own show where he can give his opinion about anything and everything every week.
