Lawyer Rita (Zoe Saldana) is frustrated by the path her career is taking and the disregard for her skills. Equally tormented by their sexual nature is Manitas del Monte (Carla Sofía Gascón), a sinister drug cartel boss (with silver teeth, as expected) and a father of a model family. Manitas saves Rita from professional boredom by kidnapping her and making her an offer she can't refuse. Their story becomes a contemporary Mexico fairy tale in which protagonists change identities, professions, moral views and political beliefs.

Emilia Pérez is perhaps the most extravagant film of the year, and Jacques Audiard (Dheepan, Paris, 13th District) once again surprises us with his originality, his defiance to the rules of cinema, and his detachment to film trends. A crime drama, a family melodrama, a situation comedy, a tragedy of fate, a political pamphlet - everything fits into this ever-shifting musical film, which mixes pop culture (the prominent role of Manitas’s wife is played by Selena Gomez) with intellectual material.
